Nodame Cantabile transcending boundaries

April 21st, 2010

There’s only a few anime that ever surpass the greatness of the original manga. Nodame Cantabile, no doubt has done it.

Mine and Kimura (of the Rising Star Orchestra)

Mine and Kimura -- students at Momogaoka Music Academy and later on, members of R☆S (Rising Star) Orchestra

It invites the audience to enter the world of classical musicians, and it does so convincingly, without losing the comical touch of Japanese manga and its quirky characters.

It's normal to see them like this

It's normal to see them dreary like this...

It had always been too easy to fall in love with its story - not too sentimental or never melodramatic (typical of shojo manga), nor slapstick - just the pleasantly average - won’t bring emotions too high or low.

Talking about the story…

Listening to the music is a totally different case. The anime will induce you into shedding buckets of tears, listening to the beautiful and grand orchestral sound…

In the end, it still appeals to emotions, but in a very different way.

Metallica references in Bastard! manga

April 18th, 2010

It’s true. There are a lot of references to popular metal band Metallica in the manga Bastard! Here’s one of them. For both a Metallica and manga otaku, nothing can be more awesome than this. :D

RIDE THE LIGHTNING! KILL THEM ALL!

Ride the Lightning is Metallica’s second album and Kill them All is their first. :-D

Kimi ni Todoke

April 8th, 2010

Another thing I’m secretly raving about is Kimi ni Todoke. It’s story rolls in slow and steady pace that emphasizes the deep emotions of the protagonist Kuronoma Sawako (Sadako) and her budding relationship with her friends, especially the person she likes!

Kimi ni Todoke - Sawako's Friends

Kimi ni Todoke - Kazehaya-kun is always refreshing!

Fairy Tail~

April 8th, 2010

Currently on episode 23 of Fairy Tail. I’m loving this anime! It’s a reminder of the good ole shows with groupies and such, kick-ass, motor mouth, aggressive, main character, damsel-in-distress lead lady, cold and cool and showy 3rd character, partners, nice and cool weapons, etc.

A good analogy to explain what the show is about:

Bleach = Shinigami
Naruto = Ninjas
Fairy Tail = Wizards!

Isn’t that nice~?

BTW, I’m trying to catch up on the manga too.

Eden of the East Music Themes Lyrics

July 5th, 2009

Alright, I’ll really never gonna get enough of Eden of the East until I see those two movies coming up starting 11/28 this year — the first one is entitled “The King of Eden” and the second one, “Paradise Lost”. Judging from the ending of the series, the first movie should be the sequel to it. I can’t really wait! *crosses fingers*

The King of the World, is he?

The King of the World, is he?

Meanwhile, I really loved the music played during the ending in this particular scene (no I don’t have the heart to spoil someone else), so I searched for it and voila!

Reveal the World lyrics

I saw you in Heaven
and heard of your glory
You saved our world from the fallen angels
I saw Messiah standing,
Standing before me with no words
Nothing but “Hope”.
When we lost dread, a Demon was laughing
But now you are showing us wonder
Giving your love
With awe, down on my knees again
I’ve got to know you’re the one,
The only one reveals the world

The King has come!
To lighten up our feet
The King has come!
To save us from the dark
Who could ever doubt? We have faith

Let me walk with you when I’m lost in the wild
I know you always lead me to another Eden
Let me bless your name, O Lord, O Lord!
Your words will never fade away
Since we believe you’re the light on earth
Reveals the world

Moreover, isn’t it always awesome to hear anime opening songs in English? I just learned that this one IS an Oasis song.

"Calling Him in and out of nowhere, said if You won't save me, please don't waste my time..."

Calling Him in and out of nowhere, said if You won't save me, please don't waste my time...

Falling Down lyrics

The summer sun, it blows my mind
Is falling down on all that I’ve ever known
Time will kiss the world goodbye
Falling down on all that I’ve ever known
Is all that I’ve ever known

A dying scream makes no sound
Calling out to all that I’ve ever known
Here am I, lost and found
Calling out to all

We live a dying dream
If you know what I mean
All that I’ve ever known
It’s all that I’ve ever known

Catch the wheel that breaks the butterfly
I cried the rain that fills the ocean wide
I tried to talk with God to no avail
Calling Him in and out of nowhere
Said if You won’t save me, please don’t waste my time

All that I’ve ever known
All that I’ve ever known
It’s all that I’ve ever known

Catch the wheel that breaks the butterfly
I cried the rain that fills the ocean wide
I tried to talk with God to no avail
Calling my name and out of nowhere
Said if You won’t save me, please don’t waste my time

The summer sun, it blows my mind
It’s falling down on all that I’ve ever known
Time will kiss the world goodbye
Falling down on all that I’ve ever known
Is all that I’ve ever known

L is alive!

July 4th, 2009

Or not. Maybe it’s his brother.

Well, minus the analytical attitude, Takizawa here is not any brainier than the lawful good "antagonist" of Death Note, but lives an equally complicated life and placed in an similarly complex situation.

I've never seen anyone who resembled Death Note's L, before I've seen this character from Eden of the East anime.

I've never seen anyone who resembles Death Note's L, before seeing this character from Eden of the East anime. Only difference is, this Takizawa guy seem to smile a lot more. ^_^

The whole Eden of the East (Higashi no Eden) series look pretty interesting. I haven’t watched the whole thing yet but learning it was directed (and written) by Kenji Kamiyama (of the Ghost in the Shell : SAC fame) and produced by Production I.G., man, this anime has got to rock! (Unlike some anime ripped adapted from manga. *cough*)

That Filipina migrant worker in Darker Than Black anime

May 24th, 2009
In Darker Than Black's 17th episode, Li Shengshun's neighbors were shown to be people of different nationalities.

Among them is a Filipina migrant worker, whose job is in the entertainment field - a Japayuki (Filipino slang / local term)

"Oh, so you're a migrant worker miss?" Untranslated dialogue would say "So you're a Filipino / from the Philippines?"

"Yeah, I've got a bunch of brothers and sisters back at home."

What’s the big deal then?

Err… no big deal. I find it quite notable that it was emphasized in the anime that the beneficiaries of the woman’s work were her brothers and sisters. *snifff*

Soul Eater anime started with a BLAST and ended with a BLEEP

April 13th, 2009

Soul Eater Admit it, the first time you saw Soul Eater, you fell in love with it and you promised there won’t be swear words coming out of your filthy elite otaku mouth. It was so cool, exciting, funny and kick-ass that you found the new king/queen of pop anime that shall replace Bleach in your heart. C’mon the Shinigami Academy’s Maka, Black Star and Death the Kid are waaay cuter than Renji or Rukia or whoever captain from that show.

Not only the characters’ personality wins a hundredfold over than any other anime, but the early episodes of Soul Eater have the most beautiful art direction you could ever see. The well choreographed martial arts in the first few episodes made you glued to your seats and anxiously wait for the next! Besides, they got the most kick-ass tool for h4×1ng off the bad guys’ heads. Scythe is the ultimate weapon, or the death scythe in its heightened form. (I could only think of it as a farming tool before.) And this exactly made a lot of sense to the entire world of shinigami / reapers - they carry scythes and not swords, agree?

But.

You didn’t know when it started. Episode 38? 41? Maybe. The animation deteriorated a lot. And the seemingly free-flowing storyline came to a rapid turn. As the drama unfolded in the anime, you also found out the fact that Soul Eater is another one of those manga-based anime shows.

And that you can only hope the producers won’t be so much in a hurry to finish the anime to meet the demands of the TV station or whoever makes anime storylines look *bleep* and effing boring in the end.

It ended exactly like that. What a waste. (Just like Claymore.)

FACE-OFF: Johan Liebert of Monster VS Light Yagami of Death Note

March 21st, 2009

In a battle between these two  evil geniuses , who will prevail?

Johan Liebert VS Light Yagami

Light Yagami VS Johan Liebert

Will it be Light Yagami, the evil protagonist of the famed Death Note manga and anime series? Or Johan Liebert, bearer of the title of the manga and anime series, Monster?

Note: Yagami here is the real one, not that spoof Light Yagami from Gintama ;^^ Err… Kiriyama, don’t interfere ’cause this is a battle royale of the evil geniuses, not psychopaths.
